Having good social connections is essential for all aspects of health, especially as we age. Red Cross Community Visitors Scheme supports older members of the community to be more independent, improve their wellbeing and social connection and remain living in the community. We do this by matching caring and friendly volunteers with an older person who might not be in regular social contact with people. The volunteer visits have an important impact on the older person’s life by enhancing their sense of wellbeing, supporting good physical and mental health, promoting healthy ageing and re-connecting them to community.
As you will be volunteering with an elderly person who may have limited hearing and vision; this role will suit a mature individual with clear conversational English skills. It is expected that you would be a good listener and/or talker who can commit to at least one hour a week for a social visit to an older person in their home where you might chat, reminisce and become involved in shared activities and interests. You could possibly have interests including playing Scrabble or a card game, reading, knitting or going out for a coffee.
As a Community Visitor Scheme Volunteer, you’ll enhance the life of a vulnerable member of the community by offering them company and friendship. You’ll also enrich your own life by gaining satisfaction, enjoyment and personal development through your visits. Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the World’s largest humanitarian network.
