The program
First opened in 1984, The SHAK (Safe Hang-out for All Kids) provides an exciting, challenging, safe and educational space for young Territorians. It is the only free youth centre operating in the Northern Suburbs. Located at Sanderson Middle School, Malak. The SHAK consists of a fully airconditioned Gym, wooden floored drama/ movie room, outdoor areas and sporting fields where young people can chill-out; listen, play and record music; run basketball, netball, volleyball, table tennis, indoor cricket and soccer competitions; join graffiti, art, hip-hop and drumbeat workshops; try new (and free!) foods; and access a range of youth support services and mentoring programs.
The opportunity
Red Cross is looking for volunteers to contribute their own strengths and interests to our SHAK team. This may involve facilitating music, art or sporting activities; assisting with food preparation; mentoring; facilitating self-esteem and life-skills building workshops and/or Red Cross curated programs; or simply providing a welcoming and supportive face to the young people who participate in the SHAK activities. Depending on your interests and your availability, you can volunteer at a variety of times in the afternoons and early evening. Volunteers are particularly needed on Friday evenings, Saturdays and during school holidays.
The impact
As a SHAK volunteer, you’ll help to increase skills of young people to take care of themselves and to support their friends. Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the World’s largest humanitarian network.
