Having good social connections are essential for all aspects of health and quality of life, especially as we age. Red Cross supports older people who live alone or have few social connections to improve their wellbeing.
This role suits someone over the age of 18 who has a genuine interest in working with elderly people. You must have good communication and listening skills and have empathy for mature aged, disadvantaged and socially isolated people.
Volunteers are matched one-on-one with a participant either in a facility or living at home. Volunteers may also run small groups with residents who share a common interest. The visits (or phone calls) are relaxed and social in nature; You might chat together, reminisce, play card games, go out for a coffee or walk, do some light shopping or visit local social events together.
A driver’s licence is preferable but not mandatory, depending on the client’s needs. Volunteers wishing to take their new friend (client) on social outings must have comprehensive motor insurance.
As a Community Visitor, you’ll brighten the life of someone suffering vulnerability by offering them company and friendship. You can develop a personal connection and make new friends. You will gain new skills whilst giving back to your community.
Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the World’s largest humanitarian network.
