Community Visitor Volunteer - South Metro Melbourne

The program
Volunteers are matched with an older person who is experiencing feelings of social isolation, in their home or aged care facility. 

Visits should be weekly and are relaxed with a social nature. You might chat together, reminisce, listen to music, read the newspaper or play card games.

The opportunity
Visits will be ongoing, regular (weekly or fortnightly) and relaxed with a social nature. You might chat together, have a cuppa, tell stories, listen to music, read or play card games.

You have a genuine interest in building friendship and social connections with older people to ease social isolation. As well as this, you have an understanding of the complex health issues faced by people as they age and use this understanding and empathy during your visits. Using effective social skills; you can engage with people from diverse backgrounds who may be experiencing loneliness. Being mature, reliable and confident, you work independently without direct supervision. You seek support and guidance as required. Your holding of a valid driver’s licence and a means of travel would be beneficial.

The impact

Through your ongoing visits, you will build a meaningful friendship, reduce feelings of loneliness and encourage social connections.

  3. Complete some checks If you are successful in getting the role we’ll ask you to complete a Police Check. In some cases a Working With Children Check may also be required.
  4. Get started! At this stage, it’s time for your induction and training as you’re now an official Red Cross Volunteer.
