The program

Red Cross Emergency Services support community members before, during and after disasters. Our Emergency Service volunteers are best known for helping people during a disaster - they might greet people at relief centres, or go door to door in communities following a flood or fire to check how people are coping, or register people on our registration service that helps people find their family and friends.

But Emergency Services is more than just responding to a disaster. Our volunteers are also essential in helping communities prepare for emergencies, by sharing information about our four-step RediPlan. They also help communities recover long after a disaster has past, helping run community projects and supporting people with their healing process.

The opportunity

Join our Kangaroo Island team of volunteers who support the community before, during and after emergencies. Our volunteers train together once a month, developing skills to support people during times of stress. During and after an emergency our volunteers set up and support relief centres where locals can shelter from an event, access information, care and comfort. Our volunteers may also visit people in their homes following a disaster to provide reassurance, support and information. Ongoing training for the role is provided, generally in Kingscote on the 3rd Monday of the month.

The impact

Emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time. Impacts of emergencies extend beyond the physical impacts, to people's social and emotional wellbeing. Our volunteers provide care and comfort when it is needed most, during and after an emergency event. Our volunteers support people to stay calm, work out ways to cope and access information and services that will help them on the road to recovery. We know that with timely support, people and communities recover better and more quickly.
