The program
Red Cross has been responding to emergencies and providing humanitarian assistance in Australia since 1914. We are committed to strengthening and extending our emergency aid services to assist all Australians prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies.

Working in the Outer Barwon region, you will be committed to providing psychological first aid as well as registration, and food and water to people during emergency events. This may be in a relief or evacuation centre, or visiting homes and other locations.

You will also have the opportunity to help build local relationships with different community groups and organisations, design and run educational preparedness activities, and provide recovery and outreach support following an emergency.

The opportunity

You will need to be reliable, possess good interpersonal skills and have the ability to relate to people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Further to this you will have the following mind set and skills:

  • A passion to volunteer for a humanitarian organisation
  • An energetic personality to proactively engage with your community
  • An ability to quickly build rapport with a diverse range of people
  • Resilience and the ability to self-motivate 
  • A flexible schedule, and ability to respond to emergency events

The majority of the time you will be working within the Outer Barwon region (Corangamite, Warrnambool, Moyne, Southern Grampians, Glenelg shires), however there will be opportunities to travel within Victoria and interstate to support other areas affected by emergencies.

An initial two day training is provided, which covers all of the skills and information required for the above activities.
There are many opportunities for additional training and leadership development available as well.

Team members are required to attend the initial training, along with team meetings throughout the year.

As an Emergency Services volunteer, you’ll help people to be better prepared, better connected to each other and more resilient when emergencies happen. You will have an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable people in your community, as well as potentially across the country, while assisting them to prepare for and recover from emergencies.
Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the world’s largest humanitarian network.
